Localy Crafted Bikepacking Routes
Malik Alymkulov
It is a natural extension of two world famous cycling routes in Kyrgyzstan: Tian-Shan Traverse and Pamir Highway. If you plan to ride the Tian-Shan Traverse then after finishing it in Bishkek or at the Kegety Pass, you can continue on the Celestial Divide and then from Osh hit the trail south along the Pamir Highway. The start is in Bishkek, the final point is at Base Camp of Lenin Peak and Tulpar-Kul lake. The actual finish is in Sarytash, from where I returned by hitchhike to Osh and then by plane to Bishkek.

The Bishkek Eastern Compass is a multi-day bikepacking journey with a start and finish in Bishkek. It covers some parts of the Chui, Issyk-Kul and Kochkor valleys. The entire route is laid out to the east of Bishkek. I have built this in addition to the existing route which stretches on the west side of Bishkek through the Tuy-Ashuu Pass.
In early July 2024, I rode the majority of the Bishkek Eastern Compass route (approximately 472 km, or 86% of the total distance) with Adam Macquarie.

The route is simple without significant climbs but it still is physically demanding due to the long distance. It is very close to the city, it starts and finishes in Bishkek. The route is looped, so you won't have to worry about transportation to return to Bishkek. You will learn a lot not only about the simplicity of rural life outside of Bishkek but also explore the archeological remains of true Silk Road medieval cities. This route can be considered as a shakedown or acclimatization ride before your odysseys in the Kyrgyz Mountains.
